![]() Michael Duell Sr. Reflection's founder, band leader, manager and drummer. Michael began his musical journey at a young age. Influenced by early exposure to a wide variety of music, he finally settled on playing the drums after a few years of piano instruction and a short trial with the trumpet. Mike began playing drums at age 12. He began his professional music career at 14 years old playing 'round 'n square' dances with his parents. Michael played in his parents popular band from 1967-1981, playing everything from big band style to disco and country music. After a brief hiatus he started playing with a small country band and then decided to get back to his familiar roots and put together a couple different bands playing more contemporary music. He formed the first edition of "Reflection" in 1983 along with his good friend Michael Tyo. In 1989, after a very successful run, Mike chose to end the group while it was still at its peak rather than let it decline after an unexpected change in personnel. There was a brief break for a couple years, and then the family band started up again locally when his parents were home summers from Florida. Mike also filled in as drummer for another local band. Currently, the second edition of "Reflection" is coming back strong with the very capable help of his talented wife Dee. Mike's drumming style is influenced by a number of drummers including his hero, Buddy Rich. One of the greatest influences has been from his old drumming friend Nate Spano who taught him that a drummer should be "felt, more than heard". Michael credits his parents more than any others for inspiring him to stick with it and for giving him the opportunity to play and learn professional music. Born in Watertown NY, Mike is the father of four grown children. He resides near Tampa Bay, FL along with his wife Denise, who plays guitar in "Reflection". |
